Hurray for the home team!

Jamie Stafford-Hill's design for Make Room, Make Room
has be listed as a "Best of 08" on The Book Design Review. Check it out. You can even vote on your favorite.

Facelifts vol.8

I believe the technical term for the level of busyness around here is, Crazy-Ass. That said, I did get a nice praising type email from John Scalzi today, about the repackage for his Agent to the Stars. So, I thought I'd play show-and-tell.

The honors go to Pascal Blanchet.

And lots of nice comments from John's Whateverists.

The Tor edition will be out in October.

(Note, I'm sure there will be some kind of quote that says how lovely John and/or his book is but I'm, um, well, late in getting to that. So, uh, I guess it's back to work...Hmmm...I'm missing a Tor logo too, errggg.))

Facelifts vol.8

We just finished up our Fall 2008 catalog. I'll share some of the covers throughout the upcoming months, starting with...

This ominbus edition edition of Ken MacLeod's The Star Faction and The Stone Canal. Design by Peter Lutjen.

Facelifts vol.6

Richard Matheson's time-travel romance story, Somewhere in Time.

Another evocative Brad Holland painting, Jamie Stafford-Hill on the design. (I'm still waiting to see if we get away with not making Matheson's name fifty feet high, since the popularity of the movie version of I am Legend, we may not.)

Earlier Matheson cover done by Brad Holland for Tor.

Facelifts vol.5

Trade paperback reissues of these two Scott Westerfeld books, due out next summer.

Facelifts vol. 5

We just had our sales conference today and this cover got the nod from a few reps. I was pleasantly surprised since, 1) it's a reprint of older stories and this particular meeting tends to focus on front list books, and 2) because it's a bit enigmatic and not everyone appreciates that. The artwork is by the legendary Brad Holland -- who also did one of my all time favorite Tor cover paintings, Jonathan Carroll's Outside the Dog Museum.

Facelifts vol.4

Our latest repacking of an older book. (Although this is its first life as a Tor book.) This Harry Harrison book inspired the movie "Soylent Green." Unlike the movie, the book is more concerned with population problems than with cannibalism. These were designed by Jamie Stafford-Hill. We are going with the Manhattan version, but I really wish we could print two or three of these.

Facelifts vol.3

Here is another re-design we are sneaking into the re-print process. I'm not sure when the next Worlds of Exile reprint will come to press but when it does, it'll look like this.

From the designer, Jamie Stafford-Hill:

"I loved getting to work on this cover---Le Guin is one of my absolute favorite authors---but it was unusually stressful, for the same reason. The book, actually three separate novels connected just enough to work fairly well as one volume, has for me a sort of vast sense of location -- settings where the main character is in some way isolated and/or struggling to exist around the edges (or remnants) of human civilization. The photo by Eden Batki captured that tone, and helped represent the chronological and thematic relationship between the stories as well."

Facelifts vol. 2

Here is another re-design of a book we've been publishing for a while, Charles de Lint's Memory and Dream. Art by John Howe. Design by Jamie-Stafford-Hill. This went to press just before the holiday break so it should be on the shelves in about a month or so.

Facelifts

I'm trying to sneak in and redesign some of the paperbacks that we keep reprinting over the years. (Don't mention all the new covers we should be working on...We just couldn't help ourselves.) Here is what Jamie Stafford-Hill did with the Gene Wolfe New Sun books using the original Don Maitz art. The first is reprinting now, the second will have to wait until we are out of stock of the current edition.
